MEDIUM ROTATION FORESTRY

Poplar clones for Medium Rotation Forestry

Plantations at medium cutting cycles, 5-8 years

OUR CULTIVARS

This cultivation model produces roundwood.

The plants have a lower density than the short cycle of 1600 plants per hectare. The use of this type of plantation can be dedicated to the paper industry, the wood produced at the end of the five-year cycle can also be used for the production of chipboard, industrial pellets, oriented strand boards (OSB) and medium density fibre (MDF) panels.

We have at our disposal the best clones selected from our genetic improvement programme

We have at our disposal the best clones selected from our genetic improvement programme

With these clones we now boast experience of thousands of hectares of plantations in Europe and are therefore well established. We are currently finishing the selection phase of another 80 clones from a more advanced genetic programme. This new range of clones was created for the northernmost latitudes in Europe. We used species more suitable for more continental and harsh climates, working a lot on the phenological aspect and apical bud closure.

The use of delayed sprouting cultivars is an advantage for producers to avoid serious problems due to frost affecting vegetative regrowth in the plantation. These clones are better suited to water stress situations and adapt to marginal soils. In addition to late vegetative regrowth, they are studied and selected for early autumn frosts, forming a good apical bud. These clones have basic parents harvested and selected from higher northern latitudes than previous clonal series. The parents of origin start from the 45th parallel north up to the 54th.

Biomass clones

Alasia Vivai Italia in its nurseries produces young poplars with a height of 1.75 m with a diameter ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 cm of clones AF18, AF34 and NH1.

The young trees produced are used for the production of MRF plantations.

The planting layout commonly used is 3 m x 2 m.
